What is an Erasmus?
The Erasmus program is named after the philosopher, theologian and humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam, and also corresponds to the acronym for EuRopean Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students. But what is this program exactly? Well, it is an initiative turned into reality by the European Union, which allows cultural, academic and social exchanges between European students since 1987. The idea of the program was to promote student mobility between the different countries of the European Union, and thus promote the European feeling and belonging to this community through education. In addition, since 2014 the program was reformed and given the name Erasmus +, expanding the budget and including areas of work practices, training, education, sports and youth. Thanks to this, today Europeans have the opportunity to receive scholarships to carry out work practices abroad, including training courses for teaching staff in different countries. The aim of all this is to fight against high levels of unemployment, especially among young people. Likewise, with this program the European Union aims to promote common European values, improve intercultural understanding, promote social integration and a sense of belonging to a community. All this through education, training, youth work and sports. On the other hand we also have the Erasmus Mundus program, which is a totally separate project, aimed at globalizing European education. While the Erasmus + program is open only to Europeans, Erasmus Mundus is open to everyone, thus expanding these opportunities to third countries.
How to apply
The most common way to apply for an Erasmus scholarship as a student is usually through your own university, which will be registered as a participant in the program. From the entity itself they will manage your application to receive any of the scholarships that are offered. There are also a large number of organizations that are registered as project participants, so the procedure and management would also be on your part. If you are not part of any university or organization that is already enrolled in the program, it is also possible to submit your application individually. Every year a general call is published with the proposals that are offered to individuals and organizations that are within the field of education, training, youth or sport. In this call you will find the objectives of the program, a summary of the actions to be undertaken, the admission criteria, the duration and budget of the projects and the deadlines for requesting to participate in each action.
Types of Erasmus Scholarships
– Studies:
This is the best known and most successful type of Erasmus. These are exchanges between students from universities participating in the program. The duration of the exchange can vary between three months or a full year. The contribution of the scholarships you will receive depends on the destination country. The countries are divided into three groups, depending on the cost of living in each country. The amount received depends on the group in which your destination country is located and the time you are going to spend there. Although the contribution corresponds to a monthly amount, it is received in two single payments, at the beginning and at the end of the stay. In addition, regarding the academic subject, there are tables of validation of subjects and grades so that everything is well recorded and there are no errors when returning to your own university.
– Labor practices
Since 2014, aid has also been offered to those who wish to carry out work practices in a country other than their own. The process is similar to that of studies, and the contribution of scholarships also depends on the destination country. However, in this case it must be taken into account that each person is entitled to 12 months of Erasmus scholarship, regardless of what type it is. This means that if you have already been granted a scholarship to study abroad, you will only be able to receive the amount corresponding to the months that have not already been given to you. For example, if you have studied 6 months abroad, you could receive a second scholarship to do an internship for a maximum of another 6 months.
– KA1
This type of scholarship is aimed at those who want to take training courses for teachers and teaching staff abroad. As they are mobility for learning reasons, they would also be financed by the Erasmus + program. In this case, the scholarships would cover all costs to attend the training courses, including travel, stay and price of the course. Like the other scholarships, this can be requested from the educational center or through the corresponding National Erasmus + Agency.
– Entrepreneurship
The Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs program offers the opportunity to create a company in different countries. New entrepreneurs who are planning to create their own business or who have started it in the last three years, as well as more experienced entrepreneurs who run or have a company (medium or small) in any of the participating countries, can participate in this program. This program, apart from allocating funds to help entrepreneurs, allows an entrepreneur to go to another country to learn from another local entrepreneur. In this way, those who wish to do so are allowed to explore new markets and form teams with local people who know well the world of entrepreneurship and the business environment of the country.
The Erasmus experience
Who doesn’t have a friend who always tells us how incredible his experience was while on Erasmus? And if you don’t have it, that friend is you. No, but seriously now, making an exchange is an opportunity that everyone should take advantage of. And not only because of how much it enriches you intellectually and professionally, but because it will mark a before and after in your life. Whether it is to study in another country, work, take a training course or start your own company, this experience will open your eyes to new realities. You will have to learn to live in a country totally different from yours, probably even one where another language is spoken. To live with people who have ways of thinking that you are not used to. But all this will help you to grow as a person, to enrich yourself and to know yourself. You will have opportunities that your own country does not offer, and that when you return they will make a difference. In short, it is a unique experience and one that I would recommend to everyone.
